Recently, controversies regarding gun violence and control in America has been brought back to the spotlight. Only a few weeks before The Texas school shooting incident on May 24th, there was an armed attack at a Supermarket in Buffalo.

​

  • These cases unfolded debates around the issues regarding gun ownership in the U.S. Issues regarding gun ownership in the U.S and the efficiency of police responses were unfolded.

What happened? On a May 24 afternoon, the attacker was reported outside the school, shortly after he crashed a pickup truck in a nearby ditch. The attacker identified as Salvador Ramos, 18, had earlier shot his grandmother in the face in her home, just a few streets away from the school.

​

After crashing the the truck, Mr. Ramos started firing at the school. He then entered the several fourth-grade classrooms and continued shooting.

​

  • 19 students and two teachers dead, and more several other wounded from the incident.

  • Despite a series of unnecessary hesitations, Mr. Ramos was eventually shot by Border Patrol officer.

Why you should care: On June 26th, Joe Biden signed the most impactful gun violence bill in decades, a bipartisan compromise that seemed unimaginable until this very incident.

  • The legislation promises to limit firearms from more domestic violence offenders, strengthen background checks for gun purchases, and help ease the process of confiscating weapons from people deemed dangerous.

​

“Lives will be saved,” the president said at the White House.

  • The money will be used for funeral expenses, medical expenses and the general support of victim’s family members.

As students you can raise awareness by researching/learning more about the incident or sharing information with peers. It also raises a controversial question that you may want to think about: What values more: self-defense or the life of school community members?
